Welcome 2013
A happy New Year! Grant that I
May bring no tear to any eye
When this New Year in time shall end
Let it be said I've played the friend,
Have lived and loved and labored here,
And made of it a happy year.
May bring no tear to any eye
When this New Year in time shall end
Let it be said I've played the friend,
Have lived and loved and labored here,
And made of it a happy year.

Diversification of Reliance Industries
Reliance Industries Ltd. Friday said it will get into the electricity business and re-enter telecommunications as it sets out to diversify after the recent scrapping of a noncompete pact between its billionaire founder, Mukesh Ambani, and his younger brother, Anil.
Addressing an annual meeting of shareholders, Mukesh Ambani, the world's fourth-richest man, said Reliance Industries will continue to invest in the development of shale gas in North America as part of its strategy to become a significant player in the business.
The brothers in May scrapped a non-compete agreement signed in January 2006 when they split the business empire of their late father, Dhirubhai Ambani.
Under the family settlement, the telecom venture--now known as Reliance Communications Ltd.--was given to Anil Ambani, along with the power and financial services businesses. Mukesh Ambani retained Reliance Industries, which has interests in oil and gas, petrochemicals, textiles and retail.
The scrapping of the pact opened sectors such as power, financial services and telecommunications to Reliance Industries, India's largest company by market capitalization and its largest natural-gas producer.
In April, Reliance said it would spend $1.7 billion for a 40% stake in a joint venture with Atlas Energy Inc., a company that has operations in the Marcellus Shale, a large natural gas-rich rock formation under Pennsylvania, New York and other states.
The company is also considering stake buys in Texas-based oil and gas producer Pioneer Natural Resources and Pennsylvania-based East Resources Inc., according to local media reports.

A new cure for acne
A face cream made from breast milk and coconut oil could cure acne, a new study claims.
A natural product found in both coconut oil and human breast milk - lauric acid - may offer treatment for acne, says a scientist.
The bioengineering graduate student from the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering developed a "smart delivery system" - published in the journal ACS Nano in March - capable of delivering lauric-acid-filled nano-scale bombs directly to skin-dwelling bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) that cause common acne.
The new smart delivery system includes gold nanoparticles attached to surfaces of lauric-acid-filled nano-bombs. The gold nanoparticles keep the nano-bombs (liposomes) from fusing together. The gold nanoparticles also help the liposomes locate acne-causing bacteria based on the skin microenvironment, including pH.
Once the nano-bombs reach the bacterial membranes, the acidic microenvironment causes the gold nanoparticles to drop off. This frees the liposomes carrying lauric acid payloads to fuse with bacterial membranes and kill the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria.

Pakistan's Malik weds India's tennis star Mirza
Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and Indian tennis star Sania Mirza married Monday after a troubled engagement in a union that bridges the two nations' bitter sporting and political divide.
The wedding was the final chapter in a complex and often contradictory saga during which Malik consistently denied claims by an Indian woman, Ayesha Siddiqui, that she had married the cricketer in 2002.
The ceremony took place in the presence of family and friends at a hotel in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, Mirza's spokeswoman Rucha Naik said.
The ceremony took place in the presence of family and friends at a hotel in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, Mirza's spokeswoman Rucha Naik said.
"The (wedding) has just been completed. Please pray for the couple," Naik told reporters.
The marriage was originally scheduled for April 15. The Press Trust of India cited family sources as saying it had been brought forward after Muslim clerics in Hyderabad criticised the fact that Malik was living in his future bride's house before the wedding.
Last week, Farisa Siddiqui, Ayesha's mother, announced that a settlement had been reached and "divorce papers signed," allowing Malik's marriage with Mirza to go ahead.
Ayesha had initially lodged a complaint with police in Hyderabad, prompting officers to quiz Malik over the saga and confiscate his passport.
Muslim elders in Hyderabad, where both Siddiqui and Mirza live, were understood to have negotiated the settlement after days of frenzied press coverage and lurid speculation.
Even without the added drama provided by Ayesha's revelations, the marriage of two of South Asia's best-known sports personalities across one of the world's most volatile borders was always going to make headlines.
Nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan have fought three wars since independence and broke off all official contact following the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which Indian blamed on Pakistan-based militants.
The stand-off extended to the sporting world, with a freeze on non-tournament matches between their respective national cricket teams.
Malik and Mirza's sporting marriage is unprecedented in the perennial rivalry between the south Asian nations, and some right-wing Hindu groups in India had denounced the union, accusing Mirza of betraying her country.

Malik and Mirza's sporting marriage is unprecedented in the perennial rivalry between the south Asian nations, and some right-wing Hindu groups in India had denounced the union, accusing Mirza of betraying her country.
The only similar union came when former Pakistani Test batsman Mohsin Khan, who is now Pakistan's chief selector, married the Indian actress Reena Roy in the 1980s. The couple later separated.
The Pakistani government is preparing lavish celebrations to welcome the couple during a widely expected visit.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani will treat the newlyweds to a reception and Pakistan's minister for population welfare, Firdous Ashiq Awan, told AFP that she would travel to India to attend the wedding reception.
"It is a very happy occasion for both Malik and Mirza and for millions of people in both the countries and we are having a detailed discussion as to how we could celebrate the occasion in Pakistan," Awan told AFP.
Team-mates of Malik, a former Pakistan cricket captain who is serving a one-year ban on charges of indiscipline during Pakistan's tour of Australia and New Zealand, also passed on their congratulations.
"It's a happy occasion that Malik has wed Sania. I congratulate him and wish him the best in his married life," said Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi.
Mirza, whose short tennis skirts have drawn the ire of Islamist groups in India, has been a nationwide celebrity since 2005 when, aged 18, she became the first Indian woman to win a WTA Tour title.
She is currently recovering from a wrist injury that has seen her world ranking slip from 27 in 2007 to 89.

The couple, who are both Muslims, are thought likely to base themselves in Dubai.
Malik had admitted beginning a telephone relationship with Siddiqui in 2001 after she sent him photographs -- but said he later believed the pictures were of another woman.
Before the divorce settlement, Siddiqui appeared on television news channels to denounce Malik as a cheat who dumped her because his team-mates said she was overweight.

Top 10 tips for producing a better CV
Think of your CV as your shop window - it must effectively display your experience, skills and qualities in a very short period of time. The following tips will help you produce a CV that does just that.
1. Keep it short and clear
Before you start, choose the right structure for your CV. The most important information, such as your key skills and recent experience, needs to be near the top, where it can be seen straightaway. Sections you usually need to include are your Profile, Achievements, Experience, Special Skills (languages / computers), Education, Training, and (if you wish) Interests. Your CV should normally be two pages in length (unless you have a very long career or you are a contractor or the recruiter asks for a longer CV). If you haven't caught the recruiter's interest by page two then they probably won't read any further pages anyway.
2. Make it look good
Clear, attractive presentation is also important if your CV is to stand out. Ensure that it's uncluttered, with key points easy to spot. Use bullet points and keep the sentences relatively short. Plenty of 'white space' around the borders and between each section keeps the document easier on the eye.
3. Most recent first
Put your employment history in date order, starting with the most recent first. Avoid leaving any gaps, so if you've had time out for some reason, do mention this. Don't go into detail about positions you held over 10 years ago. Include details of holiday or temporary work only if it's relevant to the job you're applying for.
4. Include many facts
List your job duties beneath each position. List your achievements, responsibilities and results. Talk about results - what difference did your presence make? Use numbers for achievements wherever possible, e.g. "Boosted sales by 20% in first year". And always write in a slightly formal manner and never use the word "I" - e.g. "Supervised the team" rather than "I supervised the team". Use the past tense for previous jobs and the present tense for your current job.
5. Not too many lists
Include specific skills, such as languages, administrative or computing skills, in a separate section in your CV. Don't relist them for every job you've used them in. This is particularly so for IT work - lists of tools and packages make dull reading and won't make you stand out from other people with the same abilities.
6. Breath some life into it
Remember the employer wants a sense of the kind of person you are, as well as what you can do. Are you punctual, conscientious, or motivated? Do you rise to a challenge? With each point you write, ask yourself "What does this say about me?"
7. Be accurate
Always check for errors. Run a spelling and grammar check and ask someone else to read it for you. Read it aloud to the dog. The employer isn't going to believe you're a good communicator if your CV is full of mistakes.
8. Adapt it
You don't have to use the same CV every time. You can have two or three versions, each for a different kind of job. Or you can tailor your CV to suit the job you're applying for. It isn't a case of one size fits all.
9. Send a covering letter
Unless the advert tells you not to, always send a covering letter. This should highlight the two or three areas of experience from your CV that are most relevant to the advertised job. Never send your CV out on its own.
10. Be truthful
Although you obviously want to present yourself well, don't go too far and embellish the truth. It can easily backfire on you.
